Provincial Food Security Assembly 2012
Background:
In October 2007 the Food Security Network hosted its first Food Security Assembly. 117 delegates represented community centres, anti-poverty groups, government departments, Aboriginal groups, student organizations, faith groups, professional associations and those working in the agricultural and organic farming industries.
The purpose of the Assembly was to create opportunities for networking, learning and action planning. We sought to establish connections amongst those who share interests in food security; create an inclusive and visionary event which provided opportunities for the involvement of people from different sectors and regions of the province; and to plant the seeds for ongoing dialogue, increased focus and energy, information and resource-sharing. Our overarching goal at this Assembly was to make food security everybody’s business!
Since that time, we have seen a dramatic increase in food security-related initiatives across the province. From community gardens, to bulk buying groups, a community freezer program, and the establishment of monthly teleconferences, we are in the process of developing a food secure Newfoundland and Labrador.
Call for Volunteer Committee Members
The next Provincial Food Security Assembly will take place in 2012. In order to ensure that the event is a success, we are currently in the process of establishing a planning committee that will oversee the assembly’s conceptualization and coordination. We will require representation from across the province, and this will be an excellent way to share ideas and passions with others who are committed to addressing food insecurity in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The event promises to be another landmark in food security organizing within the province, and is not to be missed! If you are interested in helping to assemble our assembly, please email us at info@foodsecuritynews.com
